Beauty is all about being your authentic self & expressing yourself freely through the way you dress & how you act & speak. However, as technology evolves over the years, we are exposed to more things through social media. This has resulted the beauty standards for women to be unrealistic due to beauty filters such as meitu & photoshopping their photos.

Since young, we are exposed to the media & the celebrities only represents one type of beauty that is considered ‘acceptable’ & ‘perfect’. Hourglass figure, small face, big eyes, double eyelids, plump lips, being tall, skinny but voluptuous. These are the ‘requirements’ to be socially accepted. What about personality? We are taught to be gracious, speak softly ‘like a girl’ & act demure. These are considered the ‘must-have list’ to be the ‘perfect girl that society approves.

However, what about the girls who did not fit into these checklists? They are being portrayed as ugly freaks or monsters just because they have ‘imperfections’ regardless if it’s the hair, skin, facial features & body shape. The could also be seen in animation films that targets little children such as Barbie & Disney. Because of the misrepresentation of these ‘imperfection’ in the media, there is always an unrealistic beauty standard just to conform into society. This has resulted in so many insecurities that us women have due to the sexist comments & actions that we experience in our daily lives.

In this project, we have defined feminine monstrosity as how our insecurities have manifested the monster in us due to the obsession to be on par with the unrealistic beauty standards. Our collages wanted to convey to the viewers that even though we are defined as ‘monsters’ for what the society calls as ‘imperfection’, there is always beauty within us as there is no such thing as one kind of beauty.
